How to choose a software development company in India: a practical checklist, not a sales pitch, for picking a team that will actually deliver.
Most software development company websites say the same four things: experienced team, agile process, client-focused, quality delivery. None of that tells you anything, because none of it is falsifiable before you've already paid. What actually separates a good engagement from a bad one is visible before you sign anything, if you know where to look.
Ask for a written scope before a price, not after
A real quote follows a scoping conversation specific to your project: what's being built, what's explicitly out of scope, and what happens if requirements change partway through. A price that arrives before anyone has asked a real question about your product is a guess, not a quote, and guesses get expensive once work starts.
Ask who owns the code when the project ends
This should have an immediate, unhesitating answer: you do, once the final invoice is paid. If the answer involves hosting the code on their infrastructure indefinitely, or a separate fee to hand over the repository, that's worth knowing before you start, not after.
Ask what a normal week of communication looks like
"We'll keep you updated" is not an answer. A specific one is: a written update every week, a demo at each milestone, direct access to the engineer working on your project rather than a single account manager relaying messages. The vaguer the answer, the more likely updates stop the moment something goes wrong.
Check whether milestones are real or just invoice triggers
Milestones should correspond to working software you can actually use and test, not arbitrary dates picked to space out invoices. If a "milestone" can't be demonstrated, it isn't one.
Time zone overlap matters more than the country on the invoice
For teams in the UK, the Middle East, Australia, or North America, the real question isn't "onshore or offshore," it's whether working hours overlap enough for same-day answers. A team in India working hours arranged to overlap with yours solves the problem that "nearby" was really standing in for: not waiting a full day for a reply.
A short checklist
- Did a price arrive only after a real conversation about your specific project?
- Is it clear, in writing, that you own the code once the project is paid for?
- Does "communication" mean a specific weekly cadence, not a vague promise?
- Can every milestone be demonstrated as working software, not just invoiced?
- Do working hours overlap enough for same-day answers, regardless of country?
If a company can't give a straight answer to any of these before you've signed anything, that's the answer.
We work milestone by milestone, with a written scope agreed before any price, and you own the code once the final milestone is paid. See our software development service or get in touch to talk through what you're building.
